Car keys we replace
Standard metal keys
Older vehicles without a chip in the key, cut from the lock or by code. The fastest and least expensive replacement.
Transponder (chip) keys
Most vehicles since the late 1990s have a chip in the key head. The engine won't start unless the chip is programmed to the car, which is why a hardware store copy can unlock the door but won't start the engine.
Remote head and flip keys
Key blade and remote in one piece. Both the blade and the remote buttons are programmed to the vehicle.
Smart keys and push-to-start fobs
Proximity fobs for keyless entry and push-button start. These cost more because of the fob itself and the programming.

Lost all your car keys?
An "all keys lost" situation is common. A new key can still be made without the original: it's cut to match the locks or by code, then programmed to the car's computer.
Have proof of ownership ready, the registration or title plus ID, because a legitimate locksmith won't make a key for a vehicle without it.
Locksmith vs. dealership
- No tow. With every key lost, a dealer needs the car brought in. A locksmith comes to the car.
- No appointment wait. Dealers often need to order the key and schedule the programming.
- Often lower cost, especially for transponder keys and many remote keys.
Some newer European and luxury models can only be programmed by the dealer. Mention the make and model when you call.

Other car key problems
- Key broken off in the door or ignition: extracted and a new key made.
- Ignition won't turn: worn keys and ignition cylinders repaired or replaced.
- Fob not working: sometimes it's just the battery; otherwise the fob is replaced and programmed.
- Spare key: far cheaper to make one now than to replace a lost key later.
What to have ready
- Year, make and model
- Whether you have any working key
- Whether the vehicle is push-to-start
- Your VIN, found on the registration and the lower driver-side windshield
